Mental health is never one-size-fits-all!

Our mental health is shaped not only by our biology and psychology, but also by our spiritual, cultural, social, and family backgrounds — as well as the support systems around us.
Unfortunately, mental health care — and health care more broadly — has often been shaped by Eurocentric frameworks, leaving individuals from non-Eurocentric backgrounds at a disadvantage when seeking support for everyday mental health challenges.
At the same time, it is not realistic to expect mental health professionals to know every culture in depth. This is where cultural humility becomes essential.
Through the practice of cultural humility, professionals can approach each person with openness, curiosity, respect, and a willingness to learn — providing more meaningful and effective care, regardless of someone’s background.
I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to discuss these ideas, including some of the mental health challenges faced by South Asian communities, on the podcast “Uplifting Minds,” hosted by the brilliant young Arnav Sehgal.
Please check out the episode — I hope it sparks reflection, conversation, and greater awareness.
